Wind effects are very easily managed in the GC. After loading the hole, you just have to click on the blue box that corresponds to the Wind type and dice roll. After that, the All in One Menu will automatically handle all 2nd dice rolls for wind and apply their effects.
Well, that’s normally the way it works. But some courses have their own hole wind charts. In this post, we’ll look at how to handle that kind of situation using the GC. To keep things simple, I’m going to use Birthplace as the lone example, but the same principles apply to other courses that have their own hole wind charts (as far as I know).
The course notes for Birthplace include an additional rules document. Among other things, it describes how to use the individual hole wind charts. If the wind for the round is Calm, you use the regular wind chart that comes with the APBA Golf Game. In terms of the Game Caddie that means you just follow the standard GC procedures for determining hole wind and its effects.
If the Day Wind is Moderate or Blustery, you also have to determine it’s Type (A, B, or C) for the round by rolling the dice again. Rolls of 11 – 35 are Type A; 36 – 54 Type B; and 55 – 66 Type C.
Before each shot (except putts), you roll the dice to find out what the wind effects are by looking up the result in the wind chart on that hole’s course board as shown below. Moderate winds are left of the slash, while Blustery winds are to the right.
Since Moderate and Blustery wind effects are always determined before the shot at Birthplace, they are 1st Roll winds and can be recorded in the GC as such. Here is an example of how that’s done, using a dice roll of 63 with Moderate Type-B winds on hole #1. From the above image, we see that roll results in +20, 5R.
In the First Roll row of the Anemometer on the Conditions tab, you simply enter a 20 in the Carry column and 5 in the Right column. Note that on a course like Birthplace, you will never have a Second Roll for wind on Moderate or Blustery days, because there is no mention of them in the hole wind charts. Somewhat oddly, you could have 2nd Wind Rolls on a Calm day, since you are using the game wind charts for that.
In case you were wondering, there is no harm in putting the wind effects in the Second Roll row in this instance. In fact, you might prefer it, since the GC will delete those effects after the shot is updated–leaving you with a “clean” Anemometer. Otherwise, you may need to edit any leftover values when you go to set the wind for your next shot.
I haven’t seen the hole wind charts for all of APBA’s courses that have them. If you run into a scenario where the procedures described here won’t work for a particular hole or course, please let me know. It’s possible I can provide you with a workaround or incorporate a solution in a future update.
