Jeff Siegel, an early adopter of the Game Caddie, has completed a four-round Masters tournament using 33 of the All-Time Great players at Magnolia (Augusta National). He began this project 18 months ago, in part, to learn the Game Caddie and Game Caddie Record Book (GCRB), its sister database program.
Here’s Jeff’s account of the final group’s play:
“[The] last threesome was Tiger Woods (2000), Arnold Palmer (1960), and Fred Couples (1992). Woods entered the final round with a 4-shot lead over Palmer and 6 shots over Couples. The dice were not favorable to Tiger, and Arnie was solid. Tiger wound up 1-over par for the day in a par fest, while Arnie was bogey-free with a 6-under 66 to win the tourney going away. Couples never factored, as he was all over the place.
“It was a lot of fun. Think I will do a smaller scale tourney on a different course. The hard part about a tourney of this size (33 golfers although I did cut 6 golfers after round 2), is that it is hard to play the same course day after day. Need to mix it up a bit.”
Here are some other highlights from this tournament:
- Arnold Palmer didn’t have a bogey after the first round (but he did have one double-bogey).
- Payne Stewart (1999), who finished 9th, had the lowest round score overall–a 9-under 63 in round 2.
- Curtis Strange (1988), who tied for last place among finishers, had the worst round score overall–a 9-over 81 in round 3.
- There were three aces–one each by Fred Couples, Jack Nicklaus (1975), and Payne Stewart.
- Colin Montgomerie (1996) hit the most fairways (85.7%). The tournament average was 68.9%.
- Corey Pavin (1995) and Tiger Woods tied for most greens-in-regulation (70.8%). The average for the field was 60.6%.
- Four players tied for longest drive: 365 yards.
- Hale Irwin (1990) drained the longest putt: 70 feet.
- Tiger Woods had the longest total made putt distance: a staggering 202 feet! (He outdistanced Arnie by 4 feet.)
- Arnold Palmer managed the fewest putts per round: 24.8.
- The easiest hole was #8, a 570-yard par 5. It played an average of 0.42 strokes under par.
- The toughest hole was #11, a 505-yard par 4. It played an average of 0.39 strokes over par.
