2022 Women’s PGA Championship Replay: R2 Results

This post summarizes round 2 of my APBA Golf replay of the 2022 Women’s PGA Championship at Congressional Country Club (Metro D.C.), par 72. A previous post described the replay setup based on conditions for the actual tournament, and another post covered the results of round 1. The entire replay is being conducted using Game Caddie 6.1 (and an earlier beta version of it).

Actual Event

In round 2 of the actual event, In-gee Chun (69) retained sole possession of first place and topped the leaderboard at 11-under par. Lydia Ko (67) and Jennifer Kupcho (68) climbed up the leaderboard (from T14 and T6, respectively) into second place at 5-under par. Round 2’s best score of 67 was posted by Lydia Ko, Matilda Castren (not carded), Alison Lee (not carded), and Lexi Thompson. Lexi moved up from T28 to T9 on the second-round leaderboard.

The round 2 average score for the total field of 156 golfers was 72.9 strokes, with the 71 qualifiers at 70.9 strokes on average. Players at +4 did not make the cut for round 3. Thus, while the field was almost a stroke over par, the qualifiers were more than a stroke under par.

The top of the 2nd round leaderboard for the actual event is provided below:

Replay Event

For round 2 of the replay, the pin was located at position 2, the wind was Calm, and course conditions Normal (0 FW roll / 0 green roll). The (adjusted) hole distances for pin placement 2 resulted in the 6910-yard layout shown below:

The average round 2 score for the 42 replay competitors was 72.7 strokes, slightly lower than the average round 1 replay score of 73.5 strokes. While the actual qualifiers on average broke par (70.9), the replay players for round 2 did not.

The top of the second-round leaderboard for round 2 of the replay is provided below:

Lilia Vu (71), who was tied for first place in the replay after round 1, retained that position in the second round–leading the tournament at 6- under par. Nelly Korda (71) took over second place at 5-under. Charley Hull (68) moved up from T12 in round 1 to third place, and Jennifer Kupcho (70) moved up from T6 in round 1 to fourth place.

Hull was joined by Xiyu Lin and Sei-young Kim for the best rounds of the day (68). Those scores were good enough to lift Lin from T17 to T5, and Kim from T39 to T20. Other big movers included Sophia Schubert (69) who moved up from T28 to T11, and Jennifer Kupcho (70) who moved up from T6 to fourth place.

At the other end of the leaderboard, Ashleigh Buhai’s (80) inability to get up-and-down resulted in the worst score for the day. She hit only half the greens in regulation and collected 35 putts. She is now tied for last place with Megan Khang (76) at 11-over par.

The actual top three leaders of the final tournament finished round 2 as follows: In-gee Chun (74) moved down in rank from T6 to T17; Lexi Thompson (70) moved up in rank from 42 to T34; and Mingee Lee (70) moved up from T17 to T9. Of the three, Minjee Lee (-1) was the only one of the three leading final competitors under par after 36 holes of play in the replay.
