According to the Master Game rules, when you are on the fairway within two squares of the green you can elect to chip with your putter. While this isn’t always your best play, here’s one way to do it with the GC.
Let’s suppose you are one square off the green and two straight line movements away from the hole. We’ll use pin #3 as our example.
The first thing we need to do is make sure that a putting distance appears in the Notes on the player’s Caddie tab. Here we see that the Putt Dist. is 23 feet based on the calculation performed by the Putting Caddie.
Next, we click on the yellow box that says Putter (Off Green). We are asked if we are chipping with a putter and click on Yes.
That opens a dialog box, which tells us our distance from the hole (23 feet) and automatically performs the dice roll (53) for the shot. We then look up the Player Result Number (PRN) under the P column of the golfer’s card. In our example, the PRN turns out to be 15. Because we are one square off the green, we use the “GO” putting column that is one to the right of (i.e., longer than) the column for 23 feet. That would be the 25-29 ft column. We can see that a PRN of 15 in that column results in a miss of 3 feet. We enter 3 into the white box and click Continue.
The GC automatically returns us to the player’s Caddie tab and records the shot, lie, and stroke in the Notes.
We can then putt out in the usual fashion. The only other thing to remember is that when you are scoring, a chip shot with a putter does not count as a putt. The GC notes on the Scorecard tab will accurately reflect this. In this case, Patrick Reed sunk the 3-footer and is credited with 1 putt.
